FNA parotid
Warthin’s tumour (adenolymphoma, cystadenolymphoma, papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum)
The second most common salivary gland tumour
Cytological findings:
- Watery or mucoid aspirate
- Sheets of onoocytic epithelial cells
- Admixture of lymphocytes
- Debris in the background
- Mast cells
Differential Diagnoses
- Cystic lesions: benign lymphoepithelial lesions, mucus retention cyst, branchial cleft cyst, chronic sialadenitis, cystadenoma, cystic low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, cystic metastatic squamous cell carcinoma, cystic pleomorphic adenoma,lymphangioma,cystadenocarcinoma, cystic acinic cell carcinoma, polycystic disease of the parotid gland and lymphoma.
- Oncocytic cells: oncocytoma.
- Squamous metaplasia and cystic degeneration: metastatic squamous carcinoma with cystic changes.
- Extracellular or Intracellular mucin: mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
